BANA Guidelines and Standards for Tactile Graphics 2011:
A New Braille Code

Workshop type: Demonstration and discussion. Participants must bring their copies of the document for reference and will participate in planning and design activities.

Time required: 4-6 hours, depending on subject area focus if requested

Description: The foundation of a readable tactile graphic is based on the quality of design and planning of the image, prior to production. This workshop provides an overview of the new braille code, including discussion of the research findings that were incorporated in its writing. Focus on specific standards for a variety of subject areas is provided in the document, and will be covered in depth if requested. Variations in results using different production methods/technology will be demonstrated. Examples of good and poor tactile graphics will be provided.

Outcomes: Participants will

  • become familiar with standards for design and production
  • become familiar with guidelines for specific subject areas
  • learn how to use document and examples as reference for production
