Creating and Instructing with Tactile Graphics
Workshop type: Demonstration and hands-on. All necessary supplies and equipment will be available for participants' use.
Time required: 2 to 2½ days (12-15 hours of direct instruction)
Description: This intensive workshop provides an overview of tactile graphics planning and design, production methods, and instruction in reading tactile graphics. Content will include an overview of the BANA Guidelines and Standards for tactile graphics, demonstration of low tech (hand-produced) and high tech (computer assisted) production methods, teaching strategies, commercial tactile graphics products available currently, and designated time for participants to produce graphics using the various methods.
Outcomes: Participants will:
- describe how tactile perception works
- determine if an image is appropriate for a tactile graphic
- identify appropriate alternatives to a tactile graphic
- identify the components of a tactile graphic and describe what each represents
- plan and edit print graphics (provided by instructor)
- select appropriate production method/technology for the best presentation of the graphic
- describe tools, supplies and equipment needed for each production method
- use BANA Guidelines and Standards to determine how features within a graphic are to be shown
- produce tactile graphics using one or more production methods/technologies
- identify teaching strategies to support students in reading and "writing" graphics
- use commercial tactile graphics products
